Translation: Reading the World

Join Straw Dog Writers Guild and presenter Jesse Lee Kercheval for our (rescheduled) November craft workshop, “Translation: Reading the World” on Saturday, November 23 from 10:30am – 12:00pm via Zoom. This is a relaxed, open workshop about translating from any language into English for people just curious about translation as well as practicing translators of poetry or prose in any language. We will do a series of exercises and translate/ revise translated texts together. Along the way, we’ll discuss issues involved in translating from one language to another and the joy of bringing a writer’s work to life for a new group of readers.

Jesse Lee Kercheval is a poet, writer, and translator, specializing in Uruguayan poetry. She is the author of six books of poetry, the most recent I Want To Tell You (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2023). Her translations include Love Poems by Idea Vilariño, and The Invisible Bridge: Selected Poems of Circe Maia, for which she was awarded an NEA in Translation, both published by the University of Pittsburgh Press. She is also the editor or co-editor of five anthologies, including Voz feroz: Contemporary Argentinian and Uruguayan Women Poets (University of New Mexico Press, 2023). She is the Zona Gale Professor Emerita of English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Editor of the Wisconsin Poetry Series at the University of Wisconsin Press.
