Autumn Society is a writing and social group for Black artists in New England. We hold monthly Field Days and annual retreats to develop craft, build community, and tell stories rooted in the landscape we call home. Our methods draw on Grinnell Field Notes for observation and AWA writing workshops for craft.
Autumn Society is named for the idea that nature is a separate order — outside the framing of white supremacy, not merely beyond its reach. We go into the field to see clearly, and we write what we find there.
- Membership is open to any Black artist who lives, works, or was raised in New England.
- Autumn Society is a committee of Straw Dog Writers Guild, and grew out of Valley Society, which was founded in 2019.
