SUMMARY:Faking it and Breaking it: Generative AI and its Implications for Writers A Straw Dog Craft Workshop with Michelle Trim
DESCRIPTION:In this accessible and friendly presentation\, Michelle will explain the basics of how generative AI (GAI) works\, highlighting some of its limitations. From there she will discuss some of the potential (and ongoing) impacts of GAI for writers\, touching on topics that include: AI generated cover art\, GAI unauthorized use of creative works\, and some examples of artists responses to GAI. Michelle is happy to adjust the length o\nf the presentation to suit the needs of the audience\, leaving more or less time for questions as the group desires. \nRegister for the workshop HERE. \n  \nMichelle Trim is currently a faculty member in computer science at UMass Amherst\, where she has taught ethical considerations of computing\, introduction to informatics\, and directed the junior year writing program for computer science and informatics since 2013. As a Chancellor’s Leadership Fellow charged with marshalling campus GAI education and policy development\, she regularly engages discussion groups of faculty\, staff\, and students on issues and implications of GAI. Her published works include commentary on the societal impacts of AI in ACM SIGCAS (sigcas.org) and scholarship related to writing\, data analysis\, and technical communication pedagogy.
