SUMMARY:Uneven Characters: Filling in the Cracks
DESCRIPTION:Writing characters can be difficult\, but it doesn’t have to be! In this workshop\, we will go over what makes a character three-dimensional\, using inspiration from ourselves and the people around us to create realistic characters (positive and negative traits\, dynamic vs. static characters\, etc.)\, and dialogue vs. action and how to utilize both to create our characters. Half of the workshop will be an overview of the topic\, and the latter half will consist of a series of short writing exercises. \nJoin Straw Dog Writers Guild for this craft workshop on Sunday\, April 16 from 2:00 – 3:30pm\nUPDATE: This workshop will take place via Zoom. Register HERE. \nBio: Regine Jackson is a writer who was born and raised in Springfield\, Massachusetts. Being an avid reader since she was a child\, Jackson has always wished to write\, specifically stories where the main characters looked like her and the people around her. While Jackson mainly writes within the science-fiction\, horror\, and fantasy genres\, she also writes prose and poetry revolving around her life living in an inner city. Being the recipient of the 2020 Straw Dog Emerging Writer Fellowship\, she hopes to not only hone her own craft but also bring more creative work to her city and encourage more black and brown women to write their truths.

During the event\, Regine will read an excerpt from horror science-fiction manuscript\, BlackBerry D’Lite\, a novel that she’s been working on. Afterwards Nicole and Regine will engage in a discussion about her work and life as an author and what it means to create as a Black writer during these times.
