SUMMARY:Grief Doesn't Follow a Linear Path
DESCRIPTION:As writers\, when we write about the grieving process\, we need to acknowledge that grief is as individual as we are. Writers differentiate characters by giving them unique voices\, gestures\, and habits. How they love and how they grieve is yet another way of making your characters come alive and stay with your reader long after they have finished the story. In this presentation\, I will give you some writing “sparks” to get to the essence of revealing a character’s emotions without being melodramatic or giving away too much. In writing about grief\, we want our readers to empathize with the character even if they don’t agree with how the character goes about her process.\n\n\n \n\n\nLocation: Lilly Library\, 19 Meadow St. Florence\, MA\n\n\n \n\n\nDate/Time: Saturday\, May 3\, 10:30 am-12 pm\n\n\n \n\n\nLisa C. Taylor is the author of the novel\, The Shape of What Remains\, three poetry collections\, most recently Interrogation of Morning (2022) and two short story collections\, most recently Impossibly Small Spaces(2018). Her honors include the Hugo House New Fiction Award and Pushcart nominations in fiction and poetry. Her poetry collaboration with Irish writer Geraldine Mills\, The Other Side of Longing received the Elizabeth Shanley Gerson Honor at University of Connecticut. Lisa holds an MFA in Creative Writing and she is the co-director of the Mesa Verde Writers Conference and Literary Festival. She is also a board member for Four Corners Writers and the Mancos Creative District. Lisa has received writing residencies from Vermont Studio Center\, Willowtail Springs\, and Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Ireland. SUMMARY:Historical Fiction Confidential
DESCRIPTION:Historical fiction is having a moment again in the literary world. Join Straw Dog Writers Guild and writer Dean Cycon in this craft workshop “Historical Fiction Confidential” on Saturday\, December 7\, from 10:30am – 12:00pm at the Lilly Library in Florence\, MA. This workshop will look at the different types of HF\, discuss effective research for primary and secondary sources\, explore and explode some of the myths of the marketplace\, and examine marketing strategies and avenues for HF. Participants are requested to bring along examples of their favorite HF works so that as a group we can share what we like and don’t like in HF. \nDean Cycon is a noted author/lawyer/social entrepreneur who has given himself permission to plunge into the world of HF. His award-winning first novel\, Finding Home (Hungary\, 1945)\, was the first to explore the return of Jewish concentration camp survivors to their homes after liberation. His second will be out in January\, A Quest for God and Spices\, is a literary romp through the geopolitical\, religious and mercantile terrain of medieval Europe in search of the mysterious Prester John. With five more works in progress\, Dean aspires to be the oldest working novelist some day\, or at least until his life is the subject of historical fiction. \nLilly Library is located at 19 Meadow Street\, Florence\, MA 01062. Registration is not required to participate in this workshop. \n

SUMMARY:What Poems Want Reading and Revising with Care
DESCRIPTION:When giving feedback about poems\, we’re often asked to point out what’s “working” and what’s “not working” and discuss revisions that would make poems “stronger.” But what would it mean to enter a different kind of relationship with our writing—one in which we let the poem itself guide us to what it needs? In this revision-based craft class\, we’ll see what happens when we try to ask: “What does the poem want?” We will look at poems that seem to have holes\, hungers\, and unrequited loves baked in\, and practicing listening for their desires. We’ll try out a few revision exercises that try to be in conversation with poems rather than “fixing” them. And we’ll discuss what it might mean to engage with writing (ours and others’) through an ethics of care. \nJoin Straw Dog Writers Guild and poet Franny Choi at the Lilly Library in Florence for this craft workshop\, “What Poems Want: Reading & Revising with Care” on Saturday\, September 28 from 1:00-2:30pm. No registration necessary. \nThis workshop is for anyone who is feeling stuck on their writing and/or is interested in considering a new approach to revision! Participants should bring 3-4 poem drafts that they would like to work on (the less “polished” the better). \nFranny Choi is a poet & essayist whose books include The World Keeps Ending\, and the World Goes On (Ecco\, 2022)\, a finalist for the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award\, Soft Science (Alice James Books\, 2019)\, and Floating\, Brilliant\, Gone (Write Bloody Publishing\, 2014). Franny’s writing has appeared in the New York Times\, the Atlantic\, the Paris Review\, and elsewhere. Franny is the current Poet Laureate of Northampton\, MA and the founder of Brew & Forge. She has two books forthcoming: a collection of essays about robots\, and an anthology\, We the Gathered Heat: Asian American and Pacific Islander Poetry\, Performance\, and Spoken Word\, co-edited with Terisa Siagatonu\, No‘u Revilla\, and Bao Phi. Franny is Faculty in Literature at Bennington College.

SUMMARY:Let's Make a Scene
DESCRIPTION:Scenes are the building blocks of screenplays. Like Legos\, each one is strong and intact on its own — but its purpose is to be part of a larger structure. This is a seminar for anyone interested in the many ways screenwriting differs from prose. To get the most from our time together\, read a few scripts online\, jot some notes\, and be ready to write a scene of your own. Please bring pen and paper: We’re going old school for a couple hours. \nJoin Straw Dog Writers Guild for Let’s Make a Scene craft workshop with Pamela Marin on Saturday\, October 14\, 10:30am – 12:30pm at Lilly Library. Free. No registration necessary. \nBio: Pamela Marin was a staff writer for the Orange County Register\, and a columnist for the Los Angeles Times and The Tribeca Trib. Her reporting and essays have appeared in Playboy\, Redbook\, Parents and Ladies’ Home Journal. One essay caught the eye of a producer for The Oprah Winfrey Show; Pamela wrote and recorded a piece that was featured on the show in 2001. Her memoir\, Motherland\, was named one of the Chicago Tribune’s best books of 2005. Her adaptation of the book Tommy’s Honour opened the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2016 and won the Scottish BAFTA for Best Feature Film.

SUMMARY:Make it New (Again): An Introduction to Radical Revision
DESCRIPTION:Do you have a poem that you just can’t get right? Sometimes the best way to get past a creative block is to throw caution to the wind and destroy what you’ve built. Join Straw Dog Writers Guild and author Adam Grabowski on Saturday\, February 18 from 10:30am-12:30pm at Lilly Library in Florence\, MA for Make it New (Again): An Introduction to Radical Revision. \nIn this class we’ll look at various forms of radical revision and the ways in which it can liberate you\, provide new perspective on your work\, and show you that\, in the end\, poetry is a silly\, silly business. “Make it new (again): an introduction to radical revision” will consist of writing exercises\, group dialogue\, Sylvia Plath\, and creative critique. So\, bring in your most stubborn poem and let’s see if we can’t have you walking out the door with more answers than questions. Poets are asked to arrive with five\, double-spaced copies of their poem\, a highlighter\, and an open mind. Open to writers of all levels. \nThere is no registration for this in-person workshop. \nBio: Adam Grabowski is the author of the chapbook Go on Bewilderment (Attack Bear Press\, 2020) and the recipient of a Parent-Writer Fellowship from the Martha’s Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing. He holds an MFA in Writing from the Vermont College of Fine Arts and his poems have appeared in such journals as Ninth Letter\, New Ohio Review\, OVERSOUND\, Sixth Finch\, Night Coffee\, and elsewhere. SUMMARY:Writing Funny Workshop with Terianne Falcone
DESCRIPTION:Whether you want to write comedy or just punch up your writing with humor\, there are tips and tricks that you’d want under your belt. In fact\, some of these “rules” transfer into any and all types of writing. \nIn this two-hour free workshop\, Terianne Falcone shares some of the standard techniques such as “The Rule of Three” and the “callback” but also others that she’s gleaned from writing and performing comedy. There will be a number of exercises to allow participants to deduce and practice some of these strategies. \nJoin us on Saturday September 17\, 2022 from 10:30am-12:30pm at Lilly Library in Florence\, MA.\nPlease register with the author at: tfgottalaugh@gmail.com. Registration is not required but helpful to the presenter.\nMasks are not currently required for indoor events. Please wear a mask if you would like to exercise caution. \nBio: Terianne Falcone recently won an honorable mention with this comic personal essay in the publication\, “The Memoirist.” She is an experienced\, enthusiastic\, and fun teacher. She has taught improvisation\, English as a Second Language\, as well as writing. She’s coached comedians in all three countries she’s lived in\, one of whom is now signed with Eddie Izzard’s manager. One of her favorite activities is organizing\, curating\, and hosting comedy nights. She knows funny. And she’s very good at getting concepts across and clarifying any confusion. She also finds humor to be a powerful tool because of its ability to open the reader’s mind to concepts that might otherwise be uncomfortable. www.teriannefalcone.com

SUMMARY:Giving & Receiving Manuscript Feedback - Workshop with Celia Jeffries
DESCRIPTION:Giving and receiving manuscript feedback \nNo one writes in a void. Although we may sometimes deny it\, most of us write to be read. But there are times when having your work read by others can be damaging or even silencing\, particularly when you are in the formative stages of a project. Many workshops have parameters for giving feedback\, ranging from “do no harm’ to ‘only speak the positive.” These are good approaches\, but what if you really want/need to hear what’s not working\, and perhaps some ideas on how to improve things? \nJoin us on Dec 1\, for an interactive discussion and overview of some ways to give and receive respectful\, useful feedback. \nLed by  Straw Dogs Steering Committee member\, Celia Jeffries\, MA\, MFA

SUMMARY:"What’s so important about setting?" Writers Workshop
DESCRIPTION:What’s so important about setting? \nAre you curious about world building? Do your characters inhabit living rooms in the future\, or trek miles at the turn of the century? Setting connects readers to a narrative and is part of the allure that transports them from one place to another\, but setting is so much more than the streets our characters walk down\, the oceans they swim.  In this Reading like a Writer we’ll use short stories and novel excerpts to examine setting and explore how writers use it to establish the worlds in which their protagonists live\, foreshadow plot\, create mood and tone\, and reveal psychological traits. We’ll work on a passage of our own to see how different approaches to setting can add various layers to our work. This session is good for beginning and established writers who want to develop revision strategies to make their fictional worlds breathe. \n  \n \nBio \nJennifer Jacobson is the Director of the Juniper Summer Writing Institute and the Juniper Institute for Young Writers.
