Books include: Women Stage Directors Speak (McFarland\, 2000)\, Keeping the Lights on for Ike (Sunbury\, 2019)\, Finding Sisters (Sunbury\, 2021)\, and That Day And What Came After (Sunbury\, 2024). She moved to western Massachusetts in 2015 on retirement from university teaching of theatre (25+ years). \n  \nSarah Marie Jette is the author of What the Wind Can Tell You (Islandport Press\, 2018). DESCRIPTION:Straw Dog Writers’ Guild and Longmeadow Adult Center present writer Rick Parr on Thursday\, March 20 from  6:45-7:30pm at the Longmeadow Adult Center. \nRick Paar is a psychologist. For thirty-five years he taught a variety of course ranging from Theories of Personality (a lot of first year students) to Group Therapy (masters and doctoral students). He chaired the psychology department at Springfield College\, served on the executive board of the Massachusetts Psychological Association\, published essays in psych journals (Psychotherapy Patient\, Voices\, The International Journal of Play) and literary journals (Meat for Tea\, Blue Nib\, Aethelon). He was a columnist for The MPA Quarterly\, The Reminder\, and the Wayne (Nebraska) Herald. Somewhere along the line it occurred to him that literature\, in many ways\, does a better job of understanding what it means to be human than psychology does\, so he began writing stories: some fiction\, some nonfiction\, some long\, some short. He is on the Board of Directors of Straw Dog Writers’ Guild. His travel memoir God Bless America and Breakfast Burritos to Go was published in December 2022. She is passionate about poetry and spoken word opening space for expression especially for those who have been silenced by psychiatry. Her short stories appear widely in journals such as One Story\, Ploughshares\, The Missouri Review\, The Iowa Review\, American Short Fiction\, Tin House\, The Fairy Tale Review\, and elsewhere. Two stories have been optioned for film/TV. Her writing has been supported by fellowships\, grants\, and residencies from Yaddo\, The Elizabeth George Foundation\, Ragdale\, Vermont Studio Center\, Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference\, Sewanee Writers’ Conference\, The Speculative Literature Foundation\, and The Kerouac Project\, among others. Joy holds an MFA from The New School and is currently at work on multiple novels and a short story collection. DESCRIPTION:Straw Dog Writers’ Guild\, Longmeadow Adult Center\, and The Storrs Library present Pete Nelson\, writer of stories\, novels\, and song lyrics on Thursday\, January 16\, 6:45 at the Longmeadow Adult Center. \nPeter Nelson was born in 1953 in Minneapolis\, Minnesota\, and attended St. Olaf College in Northfield\, Minnesota. He received his MFA in poetry from the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop\, where he was also awarded a post-degree James Michener Grant for fiction. He’s published short stories and articles in numerous national magazines\, including Harpers\, Redbook\, Outside\, Men’s Life\, Men’s Health\, Playboy\, and Esquire Magazine\, which named him one of America’s top writers under forty. He was a columnist for Mademoiselle and a staff writer/contributing editor for LIVE Magazine and Wondertime. His WWII history\, Left For Dead (Randomhouse\, 2002)\, about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis\, won the 2003 Christopher Award and was named to the American Library Association’s 2003 top ten list. His work (with Zack Anderegg) of non-fiction\, Finding Riley; Saving Myself (Skyhorse\, 2013) was a finalist in the International Book awards memoirs category. His novel\, I Thought You Were Dead (Algonquin\, 2010)\, was named an Indie Next #1 Choice and reached the NEIBA Bestsellers List. He has published 30 books and over 200 magazine articles. He has taught writing in the MFA programs at Emerson College and Fairfield University\, as well as undergraduate classes at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence\, at the University of Iowa\, and at the University of Arizona. DESCRIPTION:Poetry Critique Meet-up on Zoom is a chance for poets to give and receive immediate constructive feedback on their poems by everyone in attendance.  Learn what is working in your poems\, and what may need revision. Contribute your observations to other poets. Be fascinated by the breadth of the written word. \nRegister for Sunday\, December 22\, 1-3:30pm.  Cost: by donation. Suggested sliding scale $25-40. No one turned away for lack of funds. Limited to five participants. Register early.  Please sign up for one session per month. Register HERE. DESCRIPTION:The Longmeadow Adult Center and Straw Dogs Writers Guild will present “A Writer’s Night” with Jovonna Van Pelt\, poet and essayist. Jo is the author of “Unrelated Questions” a gorgeous book of poetry published in 2019\, and her endearing book of Christmas Stories\, “Merry and Bright\,” was published in 2022. Over the years her writing has served everything from corporation to puppeteers. Please join us on Thursday\, December 19 from 6:45-7:30pm and hear this terrific writer read from her work\, speak about creating stories and poems\, and learn how she made the transition from the corporate world to poetry. \nYou may register by calling 413-565-4150\, option 1. SUMMARY:Historical Fiction Confidential
DESCRIPTION:Historical fiction is having a moment again in the literary world. Join Straw Dog Writers Guild and writer Dean Cycon in this craft workshop “Historical Fiction Confidential” on Saturday\, December 7\, from 10:30am – 12:00pm at the Lilly Library in Florence\, MA. This workshop will look at the different types of HF\, discuss effective research for primary and secondary sources\, explore and explode some of the myths of the marketplace\, and examine marketing strategies and avenues for HF. Participants are requested to bring along examples of their favorite HF works so that as a group we can share what we like and don’t like in HF. \nDean Cycon is a noted author/lawyer/social entrepreneur who has given himself permission to plunge into the world of HF. His award-winning first novel\, Finding Home (Hungary\, 1945)\, was the first to explore the return of Jewish concentration camp survivors to their homes after liberation. His second will be out in January\, A Quest for God and Spices\, is a literary romp through the geopolitical\, religious and mercantile terrain of medieval Europe in search of the mysterious Prester John. With five more works in progress\, Dean aspires to be the oldest working novelist some day\, or at least until his life is the subject of historical fiction. \nLilly Library is located at 19 Meadow Street\, Florence\, MA 01062. Registration is not required to participate in this workshop. \n
