DESCRIPTION:Join Straw Dog Writers Guild on Tuesday September 1st\, 6:00-8:00pm for Writers Night Out with featured writer Nina B. Lichtenstein\, at Forbes Library. No registration required. If you want to participate in Open Mic and read\, please sign up by 5:50pm. Ten names will be randomly selected. Each reader will have five minutes. The second half of the evening showcases our Featured Reader. \nHosted by Jacqueline Sheehan\, Rick Paar and Beth Filson. \nNina B. Lichtenstein is a native of Oslo\, Norway. She holds a PhD in French from UCONN and an MFA in CNF from University of Southern Maine. She is the founder and director of Maine Writers Studio\, and the co-founder and co-editor of In a Flash Lit Mag. Her writing has appeared in WaPo\, HuffPo\, Lilith\, Full Grown People\, Tablet Magazine\, Dorothy Parker’s Ashes\, and AARP’s “The Ethel\,” among other places\, and in four anthologies: Ink (Hippocampus Books)\, Stained: Writing About Menstruation (Querencia Press)\, and Awakenings: Stories of Body & Consciousness (ELJ Editions)\, and Manna Songs: Stories of Jewish Culture and Heritage (ELJ Editions). Her book\, Out of North Africa: Sephardic Women’s Voices\, was published in 2017 (Gaon Press) and her memoir\, Body: My Life in Parts\, in 2025 (Vine Leaves Press). She lives in Maine where her husband\, kayak\, bike\, yoga\, and skis keep her (somewhat) sane. \n \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:How can you inject more ‘oomph’ into your poems\, deepening them with pleasing  contradictions? Poems often thrive on internal tensions that pull the sounds\, images\, and themes  in the poem taut. In this fun\, interactive workshop\, we’ll look at some poems containing  opposing effects or contents\, then create new work that dances on both sides of the fence at once.  \nSaturday\, September 19\, 2026\, 10 – 11:30 a.m. (EST) \nRegister HERE. \nHeidi Williamson is a Writing for Life Fellow for the Royal Literary Fund\, running reading and  writing groups in community and care settings. She teaches for the Poetry School\, Poetry  Society\, National Centre for Writing and The Writing Coach. Her poetry is published by Bloodaxe: Electric Shadow (2011)\, The Print Museum (2016)\, and Return by Minor Road  (2020). Her short fiction has been selected for the Bath Flash Fiction Awards\, Edinburgh True  Flash Awards\, and Fish International Short Story Prize.   \n

DESCRIPTION:Join poets Jendi Reiter and Karen (Q) Keough-Huff for an afternoon of poetry and resistance. Jendi will read from their newest book of poetry Introvert Pervert that Denise Duhamel calls\, “politically personal and personally political\, bursting with post-confessional wit and tenderness.” Q will be reading from her newest books of poetry\, When I was 8 and QBird Speaks\, about life\, childhood\, and falling in love with her wife. \nJendi Reiter is the author of nine books of poetry and prose\, including the poetry collection Introvert Pervert (The Word Works\, 2026) and the novels Two Natures and Origin Story\, both from Saddle Road Press. Recent awards include two fellowships from the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, the Saints & Sinners Literary Festival Award\, and the Oscar Wilde Award from Gival Press. Their work explores themes of belonging and becoming\, magic\, queerness\, and family violence. They are the editor of the writing resource site WinningWriters.com. https://www.jendireiter.com/ \nKaren Keough-Huff\, also known as ‘Q’\, is a member of Straw Dog Writers Guild and the Writing Sisters\, a group of BIPOC and LBGTQ+ women writers in western Massachusetts \nQ explains\, “Joining the Writing Sisters and participating in the Guerrera writer zoom sessions hosted by Mydalis Vera has been a life-changing experience for me. I had started personal writing many years ago and had stopped for a little while\, not really knowing what to do with it. I have been writing poetry for many years\, but only recently decided to perform and seek support for my expression. I found the support I needed and have found my writing voice! It has been the most joyous\, challenging\, and positive experience in my writing life. Participation in both groups has helped me to become a better learner\, listener\, mentor\, and writer.” \nQ is the author of the poetry books When I Was 8 \, The QBird Speaks\, as well as the nonfiction books The Viking and The Mayflower and Four Pawed Angels\, and the novel Sarah’s Hope\, as well as many journal and anthology pieces.
