SUMMARY:The Smell of Fear: Building Suspense & Tension with Subtext
DESCRIPTION:Join Straw Dog Writers Guild and presenters Elizabeth MacDuffie and Tamara Fricke for “The Smell of Fear: Building Suspense & Tension with Subtext” on Wednesday\, May 22\, 7-8:30pm\, at the Northampton Center for the Arts\,33 Hawley Street\, Northampton\, MA. In this craft workshop\, writers will be guided in the art of creating suspense and tension in their writing. Using a series of prompts MacDuffie & Fricke will help writers increase reader engagement while moving the story forward. This is a generative writing workshop designed to give participants a working scene upon completion. \nElizabeth MacDuffie did doctoral studies in Writing and the Teaching of Writing at UMass\, Amherst\, where she was fortunate to be able to study under seminal professors Charlie Moran\, Peter Elbow\, and Anne Herrigton. She taught at UMass and later at Holyoke Community College. A few years after founding Meat for Tea: The Valley Review\, she left academia to focus on this arts & literary journal. Meat for Tea now also includes a podcast and a micro-press. \nTamara Fricke is a co-winner of the Gertrude Claytor Award from the Academy of American Poets in 2010 and her work can be found in journals and collections including Meat for Tea\, Poeming Pigeon\, and Whisper and the Roar. Her chapbooks Our Requiem and Exit Means Eden are available online. She studied English and economics as a Francis Perkins Scholar at Mount Holyoke College and currently works as a grant writer in the Pioneer Valley.

SUMMARY:Dazzle an Agent: Pro Tips to Put the Polish on Your Manuscript
DESCRIPTION:The publishing market is brutally competitive. It’s not easy to get a query past the gatekeepers at publishing houses and literary agencies. You’re going to need an achingly good (and short) intro letter and an irresistible manuscript sample. You could pay an editor to buff up your prose\, but with a little bit of elbow grease you can do much of the cleanup yourself. At this workshop freelance writer and editor Jean Zimmer will teach you basic editorial hacks that will help you send out a clear\, compelling\, sample of your very best work. Join Straw Dog Writers Guild for this craft workshop on Saturday\, April 20\, 10:30 am – 12:00 noon at Make-It Springfield\, 286 Bridge Street\, Springfield\, MA. Light snacks will be served \nJean Zimmer has edited and ghostwritten gazillions of books over the past thirty years for clients high and low\, far and near. Please refer to her website\, jeanzimmer.com\, to learn more about her. \nThis will be a perfect follow-up to our How to Write a Query Letter workshop and to the WriteAngles conference. \nSDWG is pleased to announce Make-It Springfield\, a space for exploration and creativity\, as a new venue for in-person Straw Dog programming!\nThere is free parking on the weekends on the streets near Make-It Springfield. It’s 20 minutes from Northampton\, 15 minutes from Enfield\, CT\, two minutes from 291E\, exit 2.

SUMMARY:WriteAngles Conference
DESCRIPTION:Straw Dog Writers Guild and our literary partners around western MA are re-imagining the WriteAngles Writers Conference\, a local gem for over 30 years. Please save the date\, April 6\, 2024\, for this day-long gathering of writers. \nThat’s a long way away\, you say? You’re right\, but that gives us lots of time to brainstorm how to reinvent the conference to welcome new writers\, to think together about what kind of gathering will best meet our needs. \nSo\, please mark your calendars\, and think about if/how you might like to participate in the process of planning this event. If you’d like to learn more\, or join the planning group\, please email Elli at ellenmeeropol@gmail.com.
