The germ of an idea for a play may present itself in theme\, in situation\, or in character. We will discuss various ways to enter the life of a play and do writing exercises to get started on a 10-minute play. \n  \nBIO:  Meryl Cohn’s play\, REASONS TO LIVE was named Favorite Play by The Cape Cod Times. Awards include The 2015 Eventide Arts Jeremiah Kaplan Award\, The ATHE Jane Chambers Playwriting Award\, finalist for the MCC Playwriting Award\, and semifinalist (twice) for the O’Neill National Playwriting Award. Meryl’s work has been produced or developed at The Skylight Theatre\, The Open Fist Theatre\, N.Y. International Fringe Festival\, The Provincetown Theatre\, W.H.A.T.\, The Soho Playhouse\, Counter Productions\, The Road Theatre\, and Smith College\, among others. DESCRIPTION:Finding the Voice of Your Story with Dori Ostermiller \nREGISTER BELOW \nDESCRIPTION: There’s lots of talk these days about voice in narrative\, but what is it\, exactly? If the voice of our story is the doorway through which readers enter\, how do we let them in? How can we consciously create a voice that is compelling\, readable and true? In this one-day workshop\, we will explore what factors go into creating voice\, in fiction and memoir\, study some examples of amazing voices in literature\, do some writing\, and learn techniques for crafting a memorable narrative voice—one that not only engages the reader but also invites surprise and discovery. There is nothing more exciting\, for both reader and writer\, than following a live\, candid and curious mind on the page. \n  \nBIO: Dori Ostermiller holds a BFA in writing from the University of Redlands and an MFA from the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst. Her work has appeared in numerous literary journals. DESCRIPTION:Come listen to presenter Marya Zilberberg discuss how to break down the barriers and put Twitter\, blogs and other online formats to work. \nSocial media seem to be a necessity for marketing anything in the 21st century. But are they? What are the best approaches for a writer? We will discuss some of the successful strategies and potential pitfalls of this brave new communication ecosystem. \nMarya Zilberberg is a physician-health services researcher living in Western Massachusetts. In addition to over 120 academic articles\, she has authored the book Between the Lines: Finding the Truth in Medical Literature\, which\, thanks to her blogging and tweeting\, is used by many residency programs as a textbook of evaluative medicine. Her creative work has appeared or is forthcoming in Six Hens\, Meat for Tea: The Valley Review\, Cleaver\, Vox Poetica\, The Blue Hour and Boston Poetry Magazine\, among others. SUMMARY:"What’s so important about setting?" Writers Workshop
DESCRIPTION:What’s so important about setting? \nAre you curious about world building? Do your characters inhabit living rooms in the future\, or trek miles at the turn of the century? Setting connects readers to a narrative and is part of the allure that transports them from one place to another\, but setting is so much more than the streets our characters walk down\, the oceans they swim.  In this Reading like a Writer we’ll use short stories and novel excerpts to examine setting and explore how writers use it to establish the worlds in which their protagonists live\, foreshadow plot\, create mood and tone\, and reveal psychological traits. We’ll work on a passage of our own to see how different approaches to setting can add various layers to our work. This session is good for beginning and established writers who want to develop revision strategies to make their fictional worlds breathe. \n  \n \nBio \nJennifer Jacobson is the Director of the Juniper Summer Writing Institute and the Juniper Institute for Young Writers. She is also the Associate Director of the MFA for Poets and Writers at UMass Amherst. She founded the non-profit organization When Children Save the Day to unite language arts and social action. Her work has been honored with a Creative Teaching Fellowship from the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, the National Storytelling Network’s Brimstone Award for transformative community projects\, along with support from the Solidago Foundation and the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts. Her short story “Heat” received an honorable mention from Glimmer Train\, and “Trouble and Bones” was a Tennessee Williams Festival’s Fiction contest finalist. Jennifer teaches creative writing at Smith College’s Young Women’s Writing Workshop\, and with Voices From Inside\, created the Family Storybook Project curriculum for incarcerated women and their children. \n

Her own poems and reviews have appeared in Mezzo Cammin\, Crannóg\, Kestrel\, Naugatuck River Review\, The Mom Egg Review\, Solstice and elsewhere. Locally\, she has won both the Poet’s Seat Poetry Contest and the Robert P. Precise language ties together scenes that are gritty\, beautiful and at times disturbing. The characters seem real\, and the settings close up and bright. Some RWH stories have appeared in horror mags but they are not horror. DESCRIPTION:ABEL MEEROPOL SOCIAL JUSTICE WRITING AWARD\nWe only have a few tickets left. \nSign up for tickets here!\nStraw Dog Writers Guild will present the Abel Meeropol Social Justice Writing Award to poet Patricia Smith at a public event on November 12\, 2017\, 3:30 pm\, at Gateway City Arts in Holyoke. \nAbel Meeropol (1903-1986) was a progressive Jewish poet\, playwright and composer writing under the pen name Lewis Allan. He is best known for his iconic anti-lynching song “Strange Fruit\,” made famous by Billie Holiday and named the Best Song of the Century by Time Magazine in 1999. He and his wife Anne adopted the sons of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg\, Robert and Michael\, after the executions of their parents. Abel moved to Western Massachusetts in 1980. \nAward recipient Patricia Smith is a Guggenheim fellow\, a National Endowment for the Arts recipient\, a two-time winner of the Pushcart Prize\, and a four-time individual champion of the National Poetry Slam\, the most successful poet in the competition’s history. She is the author of eight books of poetry\, including Incendiary Art; Shoulda Been Jimi Savannah\, winner of the Lenore Marshall Prize from the Academy of American Poets and Blood Dazzler\, a National Book Award finalist. At the November 12 award ceremony\, local singer/songwriter Pamela Means will perform “Strange Fruit” and Abel’s son Robert Meeropol will present the award. DESCRIPTION:Oct. 3rd\, 2017 – 7-9pm \nFeatured Reader: Naila Moreira\nI am a writer\, journalist\, and naturalist living in western Massachusetts. My published work includes science journalism\, nature writing\, and poetry. I also write for children.\nI teach in the Jacobson Writing Center at Smith College and am a lecturer in the English department. During the summer\, I have taught science writing to high school girls in Smith’s Summer Science and Engineering Program. \nI am serving as the Writer-in-Residence at the Northampton Forbes Public Library for 2015-2018. You can read brief interviews with me here and here.\nI received my Ph.D. in geosciences from the University of Michigan.\nDoors open at 7 – with an open mike. If you’d like a chance to read\, place your name in the hat up until 7:10. Ten names will be randomly selected.
