DESCRIPTION:Diving Deep: Poetic Craft\, Form and Emotion\nA challenge that many writers face is how to choose artful details when writing about strong emotional content. Some of us may shy away from expressing loss or anger\, or we may produce work that’s overly sentimental. For inspiration\, we will read poems that elevate personal experience by paying close attention to craft. We’ll also engage in an exercise to discover fresh metaphors and experiment with form. Open to poets and prose writers\, this workshop will illustrate how to use poetic craft as a means of diving more deeply. \n  \nBIO: Gail Thomas\nGail Thomas has published four books of poetry\, Odd Mercy (2016)\, Waving Back (2015)\, No Simple Wilderness: An Elegy for Swift River Valley (2001) and Finding the Bear (1997). \nOdd Mercy was chosen by Ellen Bass for the Charlotte Mew Prize of Headmistress Press\, and its “Little Mommy Sonnets” won Honorable Mention for the Tom Howard/ Margaret Prize for Traditional Verse. Also\, Waving Back was named a Must Read for 2016 by the Massachusetts Center for the Book and Honorable Mention in the New England Book Festival. \nThomas’s work has appeared in many journals and anthologies including The Beloit Poetry Journal\, Calyx\, The North American Review\, Hanging Loose\, and Valparaiso Poetry Review. Individual poems have won the Naugatuck Review’s Narrative Poetry Prize and the Pat Schneider Poetry Prize. She was awarded residencies at The McDowell Colony and Ucross. \nHer book\, No Simple Wilderness\, about the creation of the Quabbin Reservoir in the 1930’s has been taught in college courses. As one of the original teaching artists for the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s Elder Arts Initiative\, Thomas led workshops and collaborated with dancers\, musicians and storytellers in schools\, nursing homes\, hospitals and libraries across the state. \nThomas teaches\, speaks at conferences and poetry festivals\, and reads her work widely in community and academic settings. www.gailthomaspoet.com

His short story “Crazy Hattie Enters The Ice Age” from his collection of hospital stories\, I Looked Over Jordan”(South End Press) was purchased and performed on PBS by the actress\, writer\, and activist Ruby Dee. He has published stories and poems in the US and Canada. \nHe received his BA\, and MA from San Francisco State College and was an active participant in the 1968 student strike\, the longest in American history that won the first Black Studies Dept. in the US and an entire\nSchool of Ethnic Studies. \nBrill taught high school in Northampton Ma for twenty years and pioneered curriculum in Middle East Literature\,African literature\, Latin American literature\, literature of the Vietnam War\,and a more inclusive American literature\,bringing in such writers as Richard Wright\, Toni Cade Bambara\, Charles Johnson\, Martin Espada\, Janice Mirikitani and others.l \nHe is currently writing a novel about the 1968 San Francisco State. \nHis favorite writers include Virginia Woolf\, Jean Toomer\, Sterling Brown\, Mahmoud Darwish\, and Kim Hyesoon. \n  \nBring Your Poetry! The germ of an idea for a play may present itself in theme\, in situation\, or in character. We will discuss various ways to enter the life of a play and do writing exercises to get started on a 10-minute play. \n  \nBIO:  Meryl Cohn’s play\, REASONS TO LIVE was named Favorite Play by The Cape Cod Times. Awards include The 2015 Eventide Arts Jeremiah Kaplan Award\, The ATHE Jane Chambers Playwriting Award\, finalist for the MCC Playwriting Award\, and semifinalist (twice) for the O’Neill National Playwriting Award. SUMMARY:"What’s so important about setting?" Writers Workshop
DESCRIPTION:What’s so important about setting? \nAre you curious about world building? Do your characters inhabit living rooms in the future\, or trek miles at the turn of the century? Setting connects readers to a narrative and is part of the allure that transports them from one place to another\, but setting is so much more than the streets our characters walk down\, the oceans they swim.  In this Reading like a Writer we’ll use short stories and novel excerpts to examine setting and explore how writers use it to establish the worlds in which their protagonists live\, foreshadow plot\, create mood and tone\, and reveal psychological traits. We’ll work on a passage of our own to see how different approaches to setting can add various layers to our work. This session is good for beginning and established writers who want to develop revision strategies to make their fictional worlds breathe. \n  \n \nBio \nJennifer Jacobson is the Director of the Juniper Summer Writing Institute and the Juniper Institute for Young Writers. She is also the Associate Director of the MFA for Poets and Writers at UMass Amherst. She founded the non-profit organization When Children Save the Day to unite language arts and social action. Her work has been honored with a Creative Teaching Fellowship from the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, the National Storytelling Network’s Brimstone Award for transformative community projects\, along with support from the Solidago Foundation and the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts. Her short story “Heat” received an honorable mention from Glimmer Train\, and “Trouble and Bones” was a Tennessee Williams Festival’s Fiction contest finalist. Jennifer teaches creative writing at Smith College’s Young Women’s Writing Workshop\, and with Voices From Inside\, created the Family Storybook Project curriculum for incarcerated women and their children. \n

DESCRIPTION:Richard Wayne Horton has published in Southern Pacific Review\, Meat For Tea\, Lonesome October\, Aphotic Realm\, Danse Macabre Online\, and others. He was nominated for a Pushcart. His first book of flash fiction\, Sticks & Bones\, is available from Meat For Tea Press. He is working on a second book of flash fiction\, A Dream Of Vanished Streets set in Texas in the early 50s. Precise language ties together scenes that are gritty\, beautiful and at times disturbing. The characters seem real\, and the settings close up and bright. Some RWH stories have appeared in horror mags but they are not horror. Instead of being predictable formula fodder for buzzed-out minds\, they are rich\, strong-boned and speculative\, with dream sequences that engage a real emotional second world. \nDoors open at 7 – with an open mic. \nIf you’d like a chance to read\, place your name in the hat up until 7:10. Ten names will be randomly selected. The reading starts at 7:15\, and each reader will have five minutes. \nAdmission is free; participants are encouraged to buy a drink in support of the venue. \nPlease join us! Celia’s writing has appeared in numerous newspapers and literary magazines including Westview\, Solsticelitmag\, and Puerto del Sol\, as well as the anthology Beyond the Yellow Wallpaper. She recently finished a novel and is currently working on a memoir. During this time she has taught writing at every level from elementary school through university\, adult education\, and literacy programs; received a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council; and been named a Massachusetts Humanities Scholar. \nCelia will read for 15 minutes\, followed by Q&A.\n\n\nOpen mic starts at approximately 3:40. DESCRIPTION:ABEL MEEROPOL SOCIAL JUSTICE WRITING AWARD\nWe only have a few tickets left. \nSign up for tickets here!\nStraw Dog Writers Guild will present the Abel Meeropol Social Justice Writing Award to poet Patricia Smith at a public event on November 12\, 2017\, 3:30 pm\, at Gateway City Arts in Holyoke. \nAbel Meeropol (1903-1986) was a progressive Jewish poet\, playwright and composer writing under the pen name Lewis Allan. He is best known for his iconic anti-lynching song “Strange Fruit\,” made famous by Billie Holiday and named the Best Song of the Century by Time Magazine in 1999. He and his wife Anne adopted the sons of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg\, Robert and Michael\, after the executions of their parents. Abel moved to Western Massachusetts in 1980. \nAward recipient Patricia Smith is a Guggenheim fellow\, a National Endowment for the Arts recipient\, a two-time winner of the Pushcart Prize\, and a four-time individual champion of the National Poetry Slam\, the most successful poet in the competition’s history. She is the author of eight books of poetry\, including Incendiary Art; Shoulda Been Jimi Savannah\, winner of the Lenore Marshall Prize from the Academy of American Poets and Blood Dazzler\, a National Book Award finalist. At the November 12 award ceremony\, local singer/songwriter Pamela Means will perform “Strange Fruit” and Abel’s son Robert Meeropol will present the award. DESCRIPTION:FEATURED READER – \nGail Thomas has published three books of poetry\, Waving Back\, No Simple Wilderness: An Elegy for Swift River Valley\, and Finding the Bear.  Published in 2105\, Waving Back was awarded Honorable Mention by the New England Book Festival and includes poems that won the James Hearst Prize and the Pat Schneider Prize. \nHer work has appeared in many journals and anthologies\, and she was awarded residencies at the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire and Ucross in Wyoming. \nHer book\, No Simple Wilderness\, about the drowning of towns and villages in Western Massachusetts in the 1930’s to provide drinking water for Boston has been used as a text in college courses.  As one of the original teaching artists for the state’s Elder Arts Initiative\, Gail has collaborated with musicians\, dancers\, and storytellers across the state.  She is a frequent presenter at conferences and a featured reader at libraries\, bookstores\, cafes\, and schools. \nDoors open at 7 – with an open mic. \nIf you’d like a chance to read\, place your name in the hat up until 7:10.
