DESCRIPTION:Join Longmeadow Adult Center and Straw Dog Writers Guild on Thursday\, January 18\, 6:45-7:45pm for A Writer’s Night with featured reader Celia Jeffries. \nCelia Jeffries\, author of Blue Desert—winner of the May Sarton award— has had her work published in numerous newspapers and literary magazines including Westview\, Solstice Literary Magazine\, and Puerto del Sol\, as well as the anthology Beyond the Yellow Wallpaper. Jeffries holds an MA from Brandeis and worked in news and educational publishing before earning an MFA from Lesley University. She has worked with writers at all levels\, from elementary school to university both here and abroad\, and in many different communities\, including incarcerated\, literacy\, and ESL programs. DESCRIPTION:Join Straw Dog Writers Guild for a community-based roundtable discussion to share your best ideas and most stubborn blocks with fellow writers to gain insight into your writing process and community resources. This craft workshop with Michael Favala Goldman and Lindsay Rockwell will take place on Saturday\, December 16\, from 10:30am-12pm at Northampton Center for the Arts\, 33 Hawley St. Northampton\, MA \nDuring this roundtable we will explore such questions as: \n\nHow do I create time to write?\nAre there resources to help organize my writing?\nWhere should I send my work?\nDo I need an editor/mentor/agent?\nWhat do I do with my manuscript?\n\nBring your own questions\, too. No registration is required for this in-person event. \nMichael Favala Goldman is an award-winning poet\, jazz clarinetist\, and translator of Danish literature. Michael’s seven books of original poetry include Small Sovereign\, which took first place at the 2022 Los Angeles Book Festival. He has been running poetry critique groups since 2018. \nLindsay Rockwell is poet-in-residence for the Episcopal Church of Connecticut and hosts their Poetry and Social Justice Dialogue series. She’s published\, or forthcoming\, in Calyx\, Carve\, Gargoyle\, Radar\, The Dewdrop\, among others. Her first collection\, GHOST FIRES\, was published by Main Street Rag\, April 2023. Lindsay is also an oncologist.

I am looking forward to being with your group to walk through the entire process of audiobook production: from searching for the right narrator on the right platform\, understanding the lingo used in the industry especially as it relates to pricing and royalties\, the step by step process of how to vet narrators\, what your responsibilities are as the author and answering all your many questions except\, “Why is the sky blue?” and “What is the meaning of life?”” \nJoin Straw Dog Writers Guild for this craft workshop on Saturday\, November 18\, 10:30-12noon at the Athol Public Library and learn about how to turn your written book into an audiobook. This will be a hybrid event. Please register through the Athol Public Library.   \nBio: Scott Ellis\, an award-winning audiobook narrator and producer. has narrated over 90 audiobooks and coached several authors through the production or narration of their first audiobook. Other awards and honors include a 2020 Mass Cultural Council finalist grant\, second place in the New South prose writing contest for her memoir about breast cancer “Brave of Worms\,” a 2007 O. Henry Prize\, a “distinguished” story in The Best American Short Stories 2006\, two Pushcart Prize nominations and a nomination for The Best American Travel Writing. Her stories have appeared in Pleiades\, The Massachusetts Review\, The Briar Cliff Review\, Meat for Tea\, Lowestoft Chronicle\, and Cargo Literary. Demeter Press issued her co-edited collection Motherhood Memoirs: Mothers Creating/Writing Lives in 2013. She has been honored with grants and residencies from the Vermont Studio Center\, Writers OMI at Ledig House\, and Martha’s Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing. She attended the University of Rochester as an undergraduate and received her Ph.D. at the University of Leeds\, England. In addition to publishing a book on William Carolos Williams\, she has published four collections of poems. She has held several art exhibitions\, as well as published paintings and painting/poem pairs in journals\, nationally and internationally. DESCRIPTION:Scenes are the building blocks of screenplays. Like Legos\, each one is strong and intact on its own — but its purpose is to be part of a larger structure. This is a seminar for anyone interested in the many ways screenwriting differs from prose. To get the most from our time together\, read a few scripts online\, jot some notes\, and be ready to write a scene of your own. Please bring pen and paper: We’re going old school for a couple hours. \nJoin Straw Dog Writers Guild for Let’s Make a Scene craft workshop with Pamela Marin on Saturday\, October 14\, 10:30am – 12:30pm at Lilly Library. Free. No registration necessary. \nBio: Pamela Marin was a staff writer for the Orange County Register\, and a columnist for the Los Angeles Times and The Tribeca Trib. Her reporting and essays have appeared in Playboy\, Redbook\, Parents and Ladies’ Home Journal. One essay caught the eye of a producer for The Oprah Winfrey Show; Pamela wrote and recorded a piece that was featured on the show in 2001. Her memoir\, Motherland\, was named one of the Chicago Tribune’s best books of 2005. Her adaptation of the book Tommy’s Honour opened the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2016 and won the Scottish BAFTA for Best Feature Film.

DESCRIPTION:Each Wednesday at 7pm\, whenever there is not another scheduled Straw Dog event\, any Straw Dog Writers Guild members who would like to spend some time writing together can join a Zoom session. We will spend 15 minutes on introductions\, a 45 minute writing session\, have a 15 minute discussion\, then write for a second 45 minute period of time. Afterwards\, the Zoom room will remain open for a half hour for discussion and chat. \nTo register and receive the zoom link\, contact Steven D.
