SUMMARY:What Poems Want Reading and Revising with Care
DESCRIPTION:When giving feedback about poems\, we’re often asked to point out what’s “working” and what’s “not working” and discuss revisions that would make poems “stronger.” But what would it mean to enter a different kind of relationship with our writing—one in which we let the poem itself guide us to what it needs? In this revision-based craft class\, we’ll see what happens when we try to ask: “What does the poem want?” We will look at poems that seem to have holes\, hungers\, and unrequited loves baked in\, and practicing listening for their desires. We’ll try out a few revision exercises that try to be in conversation with poems rather than “fixing” them. And we’ll discuss what it might mean to engage with writing (ours and others’) through an ethics of care. \nJoin Straw Dog Writers Guild and poet Franny Choi at the Lilly Library in Florence for this craft workshop\, “What Poems Want: Reading & Revising with Care” on Saturday\, September 28 from 1:00-2:30pm. No registration necessary. \nThis workshop is for anyone who is feeling stuck on their writing and/or is interested in considering a new approach to revision! Participants should bring 3-4 poem drafts that they would like to work on (the less “polished” the better). \nFranny Choi is a poet & essayist whose books include The World Keeps Ending\, and the World Goes On (Ecco\, 2022)\, a finalist for the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award\, Soft Science (Alice James Books\, 2019)\, and Floating\, Brilliant\, Gone (Write Bloody Publishing\, 2014). Franny’s writing has appeared in the New York Times\, the Atlantic\, the Paris Review\, and elsewhere. Franny is the current Poet Laureate of Northampton\, MA and the founder of Brew & Forge. She has two books forthcoming: a collection of essays about robots\, and an anthology\, We the Gathered Heat: Asian American and Pacific Islander Poetry\, Performance\, and Spoken Word\, co-edited with Terisa Siagatonu\, No‘u Revilla\, and Bao Phi. Franny is Faculty in Literature at Bennington College.

SUMMARY:Surprising Readers and Ourselves: Playing with Hermit Crab Essays\, Poems\, and Stories
DESCRIPTION:Upon first glance\, “Hermit Crabs” (stories or poems or essays that borrow another “shell” or form\, also known as the False Document or Trojan Horse poem or Constraint Essay) look like literary play (and they are fun!). But they’re also great tools to break through writers’ block or overcome resistance to topics that feel heavy\, complex\, or overwhelming. Author\, editor and teacher Faith Adiele will review the history and rules of the form\, share best practices for fusing form and content\, and provide prompts for playing with this deceptively accessible form that has the potential to surprise both your readers and yourself. \nJoin Straw Dog Writers Guild for this craft Workshop “Surprising Readers (& Ourselves): Playing with (Hermit) Crab Essays\, Poems & Stories” on Wednesday\, October 9\, 2024\, 7:00-8:30pm via Zoom. Register for this free event HERE. \nFaith Adiele is author of Meeting Faith\, an innovative account of becoming Thailand’s first Black Buddhist nun (PEN Award)\, and Her Voice and Voice/Over\, two recent hybrid chapbooks about growing up Nigerian–Nordic-American in the Pacific Northwest. Her essays explore travel\, race\, gender\, family\, identity\, and social justice\, while her media credits include My Journey Home\, a PBS documentary about finding her Nigerian father and siblings\, Sleep Stories for the CALM App\, and A World of Calm (HBO-Max). Named as one of Marie Claire Magazine’s “Five Women to Learn From\,” Faith teaches at California College of the Arts\, Stonecoast Low-Residency MFA\, and around the world.

SUMMARY:Historical Fiction Confidential
DESCRIPTION:Historical fiction is having a moment again in the literary world. Join Straw Dog Writers Guild and writer Dean Cycon in this craft workshop “Historical Fiction Confidential” on Saturday\, December 7\, from 10:30am – 12:00pm at the Lilly Library in Florence\, MA. This workshop will look at the different types of HF\, discuss effective research for primary and secondary sources\, explore and explode some of the myths of the marketplace\, and examine marketing strategies and avenues for HF. Participants are requested to bring along examples of their favorite HF works so that as a group we can share what we like and don’t like in HF. \nDean Cycon is a noted author/lawyer/social entrepreneur who has given himself permission to plunge into the world of HF. His award-winning first novel\, Finding Home (Hungary\, 1945)\, was the first to explore the return of Jewish concentration camp survivors to their homes after liberation. His second will be out in January\, A Quest for God and Spices\, is a literary romp through the geopolitical\, religious and mercantile terrain of medieval Europe in search of the mysterious Prester John. With five more works in progress\, Dean aspires to be the oldest working novelist some day\, or at least until his life is the subject of historical fiction. \nLilly Library is located at 19 Meadow Street\, Florence\, MA 01062. Registration is not required to participate in this workshop. \n
