DESCRIPTION:At the Northampton Center for the Arts\, 33 Hawley St. Northampton\, MA \nFREE TO ATTEND – OPEN TO THE PUBLIC \nIt goes without saying (at least for this writer) that nonfiction – about yourself\, someone else\, something else – needs to be the truth\, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. But don’t forget that your true story needs also to be one that’s well told. Too often\, stories are thrown onto the page by writers who lean on their subjects for impact and then neglect that the combination of subject and storytelling is key to the best of nonfiction. We’ll look at age-old storytelling elements and what they can bring to your nonfiction\, and we’ll examine successful essays\, stories\, and books\, those featuring great subjects paired with great execution\, and delivered in manners compelling and solid\, as well as unexpected and unusual. \nHandy handouts will be distributed. \nSuzanne Strempek Shea’s eleven books include novels\, memoirs\, and general nonfiction\, the most recent title being “This Is Paradise: An Irish Mother’s Grief\, an African Village’s Plight and the Medical Clinic That Brough Fresh Hope to Both.” Her freelance journalism and fiction has appeared in newspapers and magazines including The Boston Globe\, The Philadelphia Inquirer\, The Irish Times\, Yankee\, Golf World\, Down East\, The Bark\, Organic Style\, and ESPN the Magazine. Suzanne is a faculty member at the University of Southern Maine’s Stonecoast MFA program in creative writing. They have two grown daughters\, Kate and Liza. Trish is a poet\, arts journalist\, and photographer. She has covered poetry and the arts for the award-winning newspaper\, The Recorder\, reviewed fiction for the Women’s Review of Books\, and has written for other publications including Provincetown Arts and Edible Pioneer Valley. Her 2014 book Dune Shack\, a memoir in text and photos\, chronicles a two-week residency in the wild dunes of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Her Slate Roof chapbook\, Walk Through Paradise Backwards\, was reissued in 2018. \nJanet MacFadyen lives in Shutesbury with her husband\, the photographer Stephen Schmidt. She is the author of five works of poetry\, most recently Adrift in the House of Rocks\, (forthcoming from New Feral Press 2019)\, Waiting to Be Born (Dos Madres Press 2017)\, and In the Provincelands (Slate Roof Press chapbook\, 2012). Her work has been nominated for the Forward Prize (UK) and two Pushcarts. It has also been anthologized in 50/50: Poems and Translations by Women over 50\, and has appeared in The Atlanta Review\, Crannóg\, The Malahat Review\, Poetry\, and elsewhere. She has been a writing fellow at the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center and is the managing editor of Slate Roof Press.

Through movement meditation\, free writing\, and open-hearted sharing\, participants can offer and receive practical everyday skills that are designed to transform fear and adversity into courage and hope. Aalfs\, poet laureate of Northampton\, MA (2003-2005)\, 7th degree black belt\, and master Taiji/Qigong instructor\, has been sharing her poetic movement weavings locally\, nationally\, and internationally for 40 years. Founder and director of Lotus Peace Arts at Valley Women’s Martial Arts\, a non-profit school since 1977\, Janet is dedicated to helping create sites for revelation. His first full-length collection of poems is Break Every String\,  (Hedgerow Books\, 2016.)   www.joshuamichaelstewart.com \n  \nPamela Stewart (known as Jody) is a true “boomer” and New England born and bred.  She took up writing in grade school because she couldn’t draw.   She received a BA from Goddard’s ADP Program and an MFA (sort of) from University of Iowa.  She’s taught creative writing at several universities including ASU\, University of Arizona\, UC Irvine\, and University of Houston.  In 1982 she received a Guggenheim and traveled to Cornwall in the UK where she returned to live for 7 years. Jody came back to western Massachusetts in 1990 and in 1994 she\, and her then husband\, moved to a farm at the edge of Hawley. Over the years she’s published in a number of magazines\, received 3 Pushcart publications\, and is the author of 6 full-length books of poems: The St. Vlas Elegies (L’Epervier press\, 1977)\, Cascades (L’Epervier Press\, 1979)\, Nightblind (Ion Books\, 1985)\, Infrequent Mysteries (Alice James Books\, 1991)\, The Red Window  (Univ. of Georgia Press\, 1997)\, and Ghost Farm (Pleasure Boat Studio\, 2010.) A chapbook\, Just Visiting\, was published by Grey Suit Editions\, London\, 2014. Jody continues to live on the farm with 3 dogs\, a number of elderly sheep\, a rescued race horse\, a pudgy donkey\,  a couple of goats\, and some old pigs and birds. At some point she intends to tackle a “new and selected” if the dogs let her. \n  \n  \n  \n

If the voice of our story is the doorway through which readers enter\, how do we let them in? How can we consciously create a voice that is compelling\, readable and true? In this one-day workshop\, we will explore what factors go into creating voice\, in fiction and memoir\, study some examples of amazing voices in literature\, do some writing\, and learn techniques for crafting a memorable narrative voice—one that not only engages the reader but also invites surprise and discovery. There is nothing more exciting\, for both reader and writer\, than following a live\, candid and curious mind on the page. \n  \nBIO: Dori Ostermiller holds a BFA in writing from the University of Redlands and an MFA from the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst. Her work has appeared in numerous literary journals. We will discuss some of the successful strategies and potential pitfalls of this brave new communication ecosystem. \nMarya Zilberberg is a physician-health services researcher living in Western Massachusetts. In addition to over 120 academic articles\, she has authored the book Between the Lines: Finding the Truth in Medical Literature\, which\, thanks to her blogging and tweeting\, is used by many residency programs as a textbook of evaluative medicine. Her creative work has appeared or is forthcoming in Six Hens\, Meat for Tea: The Valley Review\, Cleaver\, Vox Poetica\, The Blue Hour and Boston Poetry Magazine\, among others. SUMMARY:"What’s so important about setting?" Writers Workshop
DESCRIPTION:What’s so important about setting? \nAre you curious about world building? Do your characters inhabit living rooms in the future\, or trek miles at the turn of the century? Setting connects readers to a narrative and is part of the allure that transports them from one place to another\, but setting is so much more than the streets our characters walk down\, the oceans they swim.  In this Reading like a Writer we’ll use short stories and novel excerpts to examine setting and explore how writers use it to establish the worlds in which their protagonists live\, foreshadow plot\, create mood and tone\, and reveal psychological traits. We’ll work on a passage of our own to see how different approaches to setting can add various layers to our work. This session is good for beginning and established writers who want to develop revision strategies to make their fictional worlds breathe. \n  \n \nBio \nJennifer Jacobson is the Director of the Juniper Summer Writing Institute and the Juniper Institute for Young Writers. She is also the Associate Director of the MFA for Poets and Writers at UMass Amherst. She founded the non-profit organization When Children Save the Day to unite language arts and social action. Her work has been honored with a Creative Teaching Fellowship from the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, the National Storytelling Network’s Brimstone Award for transformative community projects\, along with support from the Solidago Foundation and the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts. Her short story “Heat” received an honorable mention from Glimmer Train\, and “Trouble and Bones” was a Tennessee Williams Festival’s Fiction contest finalist. Jennifer teaches creative writing at Smith College’s Young Women’s Writing Workshop\, and with Voices From Inside\, created the Family Storybook Project curriculum for incarcerated women and their children. \n

Come for answers to all your questions about engaging an editor’s services and making the most of the editorial relationship.  \n\n \n \nBio:\nLibby Maxey\, of Conway\, MA\, is a senior editor at the online journal Literary Mama\, where she has worked in the Literary Reflections department since 2012. She also edits for Amherst College and as a freelancer (libbymaxey.com). Her clients include short story writers\, academics\, translators\, novelists\, memoirists\, poets\, essayists\, journalists\, and writers for whom English is a second language. Her own poems and reviews have appeared in Mezzo Cammin\, Crannóg\, Kestrel\, Naugatuck River Review\, The Mom Egg Review\, Solstice and elsewhere. Locally\, she has won both the Poet’s Seat Poetry Contest and the Robert P. Collén Poetry Contest\, and her work was selected for the Northampton Arts Council’s 2017 Visual Arts and Poetry Biennial. Her nonliterary activities include singing classical repertoire and mothering two sons. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:ABEL MEEROPOL SOCIAL JUSTICE WRITING AWARD\nWe only have a few tickets left. \nSign up for tickets here!\nStraw Dog Writers Guild will present the Abel Meeropol Social Justice Writing Award to poet Patricia Smith at a public event on November 12\, 2017\, 3:30 pm\, at Gateway City Arts in Holyoke. \nAbel Meeropol (1903-1986) was a progressive Jewish poet\, playwright and composer writing under the pen name Lewis Allan. He is best known for his iconic anti-lynching song “Strange Fruit\,” made famous by Billie Holiday and named the Best Song of the Century by Time Magazine in 1999. He and his wife Anne adopted the sons of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg\, Robert and Michael\, after the executions of their parents. Abel moved to Western Massachusetts in 1980. \nAward recipient Patricia Smith is a Guggenheim fellow\, a National Endowment for the Arts recipient\, a two-time winner of the Pushcart Prize\, and a four-time individual champion of the National Poetry Slam\, the most successful poet in the competition’s history. She is the author of eight books of poetry\, including Incendiary Art; Shoulda Been Jimi Savannah\, winner of the Lenore Marshall Prize from the Academy of American Poets and Blood Dazzler\, a National Book Award finalist. At the November 12 award ceremony\, local singer/songwriter Pamela Means will perform “Strange Fruit” and Abel’s son Robert Meeropol will present the award. DESCRIPTION:The Easy Way to  \nWrite 30 Poems in 30 Days \n For Fun and Your Favorite Non-Profit!*  \n(namely – *The Center for New Americans) \nA Workshop for Poets and Non-Poets Alike \nby Tommy Twilite \n  \nSaturday Noon-2pm\, October 14th\, 2017 \nGreat Falls Discovery Center\, Turners Falls MA \nas part of the \nThe Great Falls Word Festival in Turners Falls\nUsing simple prompts\, found objects\, family photographs\, musical compositions\, blind luck\, and a small amount of consistent effort and imagination\, Tommy will demonstrate some of the “tricks of the trade” he used to complete his wildly successful 2016 campaign to write “30 Poems In November” and how he was able to lead the Center For New Americans effort to far surpassing its fundraising goals.  The emphasis of this 90-minute workshop will be on having fun\, and on using your creativity and positive energy to fulfill your own dream of writing 30 Poems in 30 Days. Feedback\, discussion\, and participation from the group is expected and strongly encouraged.   \n\nTommy Twilite\, a.k.a. Tom Clark\, is a retired Fire Captain\, former EMT\, woodworker\, amateur chef\, vintage car enthusiast\, musician\, songwriter and poet who lives in Florence\, Massachusetts.  He is the Co-founder and Director of the Florence PoetsSocietyy and Executive Editor of Silkworm.  Tommy broadcasts a weekly radio show on WXOJ-FM Valley Free Radio called the Twilite Poetry Pub which features an eclectic selection of music\, poetry\, and guests.  He was also the 2016 chairperson for “30 Poems In November”\, a fundraising event for the Center For New Americans.  Tommy believes that poetry has the power to change the world.
