DESCRIPTION:Do you have a memoir brewing but need a little guidance to help get in on the page? \nJoin acclaimed author and memoirist Pamela Marin Saturday October 3rd from 10:30-12:30 to help you jumpstart your own memoir or get back to the project you’ve been trying to finish. \nAfter a brief discussion of the differences between memoir and autobiography\, we’ll work through a series of writing exercises to help focus and expand on the elements of your life story that will engage readers. \nPamela Marin was a staff writer for the Orange County Register\, and a columnist for the Los Angeles Times and The Tribeca Trib. Her reporting and essays have appeared in Playboy\, Redbook\, Parents\, AARP Magazine\, Ladies’ Home Journal and other magazines. One of her essays caught the eye of a producer for The Oprah Winfrey Show; Pamela wrote and recorded a piece that was featured on the show in 2001. Her memoir\, Motherland\, was named one of the Chicago Tribune’s best books of 2005. Her screenplay adaptation of the book Tommy’s Honour opened the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2016 and won the Scottish BAFTA for Best Feature Film. \nPamela’s memoir is in the Forbes library’s collection\, and copies are available at Amazon and independent bookstores.

DESCRIPTION:WOW Center and Straw Dog Writers Guild to present author Stephen Billias! \nWestfield on Weekends (WOW) in association with Straw Dog Writers Guild and WhipCity Wordsmiths\, will present poet and author Stephen Billias as part of the free “Writers Out Loud Guest Author Series.”  The event will take place on Thursday\, September 24th at 7:00 PM at The WOW Center\, 105 Elm Street in Westfield’s Downtown Cultural District. \nStephen Billias is the published author of seven fantasy novels\, one collection of short stories\, and a literary novel\, Pilgrim Maya\, that he wrote with his wife Bela Breslau. He is a MacDowell Fellow. Stephen has worked as a professional actor\, street-performing juggler\, dishwasher\, New York City taxi driver\, technical writer\, and project manager. \nWith The Zen Time Traveler\, Stephen is returning to the Buddhist themes he explored in his first fantasy novel\, The American Book of the Dead\, a black comedy about World War III issued by Time Warner under the Questar imprint. \nThe Zen Time Traveler: A Pilgrim’s Journey Through the Koans \n \nStephen Maine is a middle-aged project manager navigating the collapse of his marriage and the quiet despair of modern burnout. But his weekly Zen meditation class in a Massachusetts church basement offers an unexpected escape. DESCRIPTION:WOW Center and Straw Dog Writers Guild to present debut author Don Lesser! \nWestfield on Weekends (WOW) in association with Straw Dog Writers Guild and WhipCity Wordsmiths\, will present debut author Don Lesser as part of the free “Writers Out Loud Guest Author Series.”  The event will take place on Thursday\, June 25th at 7:00 PM at The WOW Center\, 105 Elm Street in Westfield’s Downtown Cultural District. \nDon Lesser received his MFA in fiction from the University of Massachusetts. His food articles have won awards at the Greenbrier Symposium for Professional Food Writers. He has participated in workshops with the Pioneer Valley Writers’ Workshop and Straw Dog Writers Guild. Crystal Springs is his first published book. \nThis literary fiction debut celebrates a love of place\, the bonds of found families\, and the lasting connections\, unbroken by secrets\, between friends. BookLife by Publishers Weekly calls it “warm and alive…[an] incisive novel of aging\, compromise\, and Pioneer Valley life.” \nCrystal Springs\, set in western Massachusetts\, follows the life of Steven Bennett\, a historian\, chef\, and programmer. After raising a family\, the sudden suspected overdose of a young woman in town upends Steven’s life.
