DESCRIPTION:The Longmeadow Adult Center and Straw Dogs Writers Guild will present “A Writer’s Night” with Beth Filson. Join us on Thursday\, May 18 from 6:45-7:45pm at The Longmeadow Adult Center.. Beth is a graduate of the Iowa Writers Workshop\, local bookseller\, writer and self-taught artist. While her background is in poetry\, she’s devoted a good chunk of the last ten years completing her first novel. Her poetry and prose have appeared in The Los Angeles Review\, Spoon River Poetry Review\, Naugatuck River Review\, Meat for Tea\, and others. Beth was the 2015 winner of the Wild Light Poetry contest featured by Red Hen Press and the Los Angeles Review. Her art has appeared on the cover of The Florida Review and most recently was included in a show at the Hosmer Gallery\, most recently. Co-founder of the much acclaimed International Language Institute\, for over forty years Lexi has taught Spanish\, Italian\, Esperanto\, Catalan as well as Arabic and Chinese. Her first book\, Playing With a Full Deck\, is a (mostly) humorous look at life. At present she is working on two books: I Was Going to Write a Book but I Forgot What I Wanted to Say\, a story about caring for her mother with dementia. The second book is Dancing with Words\, informative and humorous essays on language. He is also a psychologist who chaired the Department of Psychology at Springfield College where he taught courses in counseling and psychotherapy. He served on the Executive Board of the Massachusetts Psychological Association. His stories have been published in Meat for Tea\, Blue Nib\, Aethelon\, Voices\, Psychotherapy Patient\, and The International Journal of Play among others. He has been a columnist for three newspapers/journals and is on the board of Straw Dogs Writers Guild. His academic writing has appeared in a variety of journals with topics ranging from the metaphysical\, to play and creativity. DESCRIPTION:Straw Dog Writers’ Guild and the Longmeadow Adult Center present poet\, actor\, comedian\, Chris O’Carroll\, Thursday\, October 20 from 6:45-7:45pm. \nChris was a virtually unknown stand-up comic in the year 2000 when he self-published Take These Rhymes . . Please: Rude Limericks and Other Crimes Against Literature and began hawking that volume after the show at comedy clubs. From toking on limericks\, it was a short step to mainlining sonnets\, and he quickly became a virtually unknown poet. Chris has been Light magazine’s featured poet\, and his work also appears in New York City Haiku\, Love Affairs at the Villa Nelle\, Extreme Sonnets\, and The Great American Wise Ass Poetry Anthology\, among other collections.  He is the author of two books of poems\, The Joke’s on Me and Abracadabratude. He is also a member of Actors Equity\, whose favorite stage roles have included Frank in Educating Rita\, Friar Lawrence in Romeo and Juliet\, Scrooge in A Christmas Carol\, and Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh. \nLongmeadow Adult Center is located at 231 Maple Road.
